Finding the Quiet Side of the Island: My Favorite Adult-Only Vacation Ideas for Cozumel Mexico
I am Silvia. For over 14 years, I have been welcoming travelers to Cozumel. I have a little slice of heaven called Stingray Villa, located right in the middle of downtown San Miguel.
Remember the Time you used to make a mix tape for a summer road trip, roll down the window, and just drive? We had fewer distractions back then. There were no cell phones ringing every 5 minutes. No constant breaking news. Only you, the open road, and good friends. That feeling of total, unadulterated freedom is exactly what people are searching for when they finally get some Time off.
When you reach your 40s and 50s, the definition of a great trip changes. You don’t want to compete for a pool chair at 7 am. You don’t want to listen to a screaming child while you try to read a paperback. All you really want is some peace, good food, and a comfortable bed. That is why so many of my guests request information on adult-only vacation ideas for Cozumel, Mexico. They want the insider tip on how to bypass the crowded cruise ship ports and discover the authentic, quiet side of our beautiful Caribbean island.
Pull up a chair and hang out for a while. If you’re ready to recharge your batteries and remember what it feels like to simply breathe, here are my recommendations:
Discovering the untamed East Coast
Most visitors to Cozumel only visit the west side. That is where the cruise ships dock and the large family resorts are located. However, if you are seeking a romantically tranquil, adult-oriented experience, you must travel to the east side. The locals refer to this area as the “Wild Side”.
Rent a vintage VW Bug or an open-top jeep for the day. Roll down the top and enjoy the warm salt air blowing across your face. The ride itself is reminiscent of a classic John Hughes film, where the hero finally discovers what really matters in life.
After crossing the island, you’ll see miles of pristine coastline that remain untamed. The waves are larger here than on the western coast. The waves crash against the limestone rocks, creating an awe-inspiring sight. Enjoy the serenity of this wild coastline. Take a stop at Chen Rio. They offer a natural tidal pool where you can swim in crystal-clear waters safely away from the powerful currents of the ocean. Sit at a table on the beach, order a plate of fresh ceviche, and enjoy an icy cold Mexican beer. Don’t expect loud music blasting from speakers or MCs shouting orders in Spanish. Simply enjoy the soothing sounds of the ocean and clink of glasses.
Snorkeling and Diving Without the Crowds
It would be impossible to discuss adult-only vacation ideas for Cozumel, Mexico, without discussing the ocean. The coral reefs surrounding our island are among the most renowned around the globe. But going on a massive “cattle” boat with 50+ other tourists wearing identical life vests? Thank you very much!
Book your trip with a small, boutique-style dive shop if you’re a certified scuba diver. These shops typically carry no more than 6 divers per trip. As such, your dives will be peaceful and relaxing. You’ll be able to leisurely drift along Palancar Reef and view sea turtles swimming by as though they had all day.
Alternatively, avoid crowded beach clubs altogether and head to Money Bar to go shore snorkeling. Order a drink and slip into the water using your mask to explore the Dzul-Ha reef. Once finished, sit back and watch as the sun sets. The hues of red, yellow, pink, and purple in the sky create breathtaking colors. This is a perfect setting to sit with your significant other, hold hands, reminisce about why you fell in love in the first place, and relax together.
A dinner that really tastes like Mexico!
Food is an integral component of any successful getaway. I consistently advise my clients to dine beyond the main tourist areas for dinner. That is where you’ll find authentic Mexican cuisine served by friendly owners.
For a memorable dining experience, reserve a table at buccanos at night. This multi-sensory experience is unlike anything else available in Cozumel. The ambiance is dimmed low; service is exceptional; and seafood is caught daily by local fishermen. Be sure to sample either their lobster or catch-of-the-day dishes (paired with smoked mezcal)!
And speaking of mezcal… a private mezcal tasting experience is one of the best adult-only vacation ideas to book in Cozumel, Mexico.
Sit down with an experienced mezcals guide who explains the rich history behind Mexico’s least understood spirits and their complex flavor profiles. This isn’t about shot-drinking like a college student during spring break… It’s about savoring each glass slowly as the agave flavors coat your tongue and appreciating centuries-old craftsmanship.
Exploring San Miguel on foot
There are plenty of ways to fill an afternoon on Cozumel. Another way is to wander around downtown San Miguel. When the cruise ship hordes retreat back aboard their vessels mid-afternoon, San Miguel transforms into an authentic Mexican village once again.
Pick up some gelato and stroll along the malecon (waterfront promenade). The views from the sea walls overlooking the harbor are perfect for sitting and watching life pass by. It’s almost like those lazy summer afternoons from your youth, where there was no place you needed to be or anything to do but watch the sky turn different colors. Check out some local street artists or pop into an art gallery. San Miguel is extremely safe, very quaint, and an ideal way to burn off that large meal you had earlier.
The Art of Doing Absolutely Nothing
At times, doing absolutely nothing is one of the greatest vacation activities possible. This is exactly what I based Stingray Villa on.
When I originally built our mini-resort (only 4 units), I specifically targeted the type of traveler I wanted. I was targeting couples traveling with scuba gear or people desiring high-end boutique accommodations sans massive resort Crowds. In addition to offering exclusive use for adults only (we do not allow kids or outside visitors), we also included amenities such as organic coffee from Chiapas in each unit (because life is far too short for subpar coffee), fast wi-fi access (at 800 Mbps – faster than most anywhere on-island), and enormous king size beds with soft sheets (for ultimate relaxation after a busy day exploring).
In terms of convenience, we could not be better positioned within walking distance of both downtown San Miguel and the Caribbean Sea/ferry terminal/best restaurants in town.
Maintaining your Time
We dedicate so much Time in our lives caring for others, whether it be managing our team members at work, raising our families, or maintaining our households. Taking Time for yourself — an adult-only vacation — is not selfish; it is essential to maintain your mental health.
No matter how you decide to spend your days (exploring ancient Mayan ruins in the jungle, scuba diving into the deep blue sea, or simply lounging by the pool reading a thriller novel), Cozumel has a unique ability to reset your internal clock; we call this rhythm “Island Time”.
