Covid-19 Closes Cozumel Golf Course

It is sad to learn that Covid-19 has closed the Golf Course on Cozumel’s north shore. For almost 20 years, Cozumel Country Club (Isla Maya Club de Golf, SA de CV) has been a proud member of the Cozumel community and has provided great golf experiences to Cozumel residents and the many tourists who visit Cozumel. The course featured four sets of tees, catering to golfers of all skill levels and enhancing the overall golfing experience. Like many other hospitality and service providers, the pandemic created many challenges for the Club, and the changes in the cruise line and tourism industry were complex. After many discussions on how to ensure a strong and viable future, the club decided that the Cozumel Country Club was no longer sustainable and made the unfortunate decision to close the Club. The closure became effective on January 31, 2021.

This wonderful Club’s members, employees, and guests created many incredible memories, friendships, and relationships. The club has deeply appreciated its members throughout the years.

Unique and fun, Cozumel is a land that has so much to offer. One would almost end up being confused about what to take and miss. But worry not, we’ve got your back! For those with a knack for golfing, Cozumel is just the right spot for you.

Fancy this! You’re out on vacation in Cozumel with your entire family. Some members sit by the Riviera Maya and enjoy fresh waves rolling back and forth, and those in for golfing can have the time of their lives. Interesting, no? The Meliá Cozumel Golf All-Inclusive Resort offers a variety of activities specifically designed for kids, including a Kids’ Club and a children’s play area.

The Cozumel Country Club (on Cozumel’s north shore) is a complete package. With lush green vegetation and unparalleled facilities, including four sets of tees, there is no place else you would instead want to go to. Cozumel Country Club is a local and tourist favorite. This state-of-the-art club is a masterpiece that will make you have the best of your trip to Cozumel. Adorned with bright white sandy heaps, greens that remind you of a green palace, and lakes surrounding the Nicklaus Design Group course holes, this is a paradise for any golf lover. Home to Mexico’s first Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary Golf Course, they also offer tours for bird watchers. So, what are you thinking about? Pack your bags, head to the Cozumel Country Club, and savor a few moments of an intense golf session and an amazing refreshment time. With eighteen holes and a lavish ambiance, this one is not for you to miss.

Another top-notch golf course near the Mayan River is El Camaleón Mayakoba. The constantly changing views of this golf club account for its name, and it is well suited, we must say! Surrounded by different ecosystems such as the Mayan Jungle, the mangrove wetlands, and the Caribbean Sea coastline, this one is breathtaking. Whether you have a vast budget or one as tight as your jeans, Cozumel has something for everyone!

Course Closure and Impact

The temporary closure of the Cozumel Golf Club has sent ripples through the local golfing community and the broader tourism industry. This beloved course, a staple for residents and visitors, has seen a significant loss in revenue, affecting not just the club but surrounding businesses. The impact extends to the livelihoods of many, including golf instructors, maintenance staff, and hospitality workers, who have all felt the sting of this unfortunate event. The Cozumel golf scene has undoubtedly taken a hit, but the community remains hopeful for a brighter future.

Tourism and Economic Effects

The closure of the Cozumel Golf Club has had a profound economic impact on the local area. As a major attraction, the club’s shutdown has led to a noticeable decline in tourism activity, affecting hotel bookings and restaurant sales. Local businesses that thrived on the influx of golfers and tourists now face significant revenue losses. The economic repercussions are estimated to be in the millions, underscoring the importance of the golf club to Cozumel’s economy. The community feels the strain, but there is a collective hope for recovery and renewal.

Future Reopening and Plans

It’s tough to break this news, but I need to be straight with you about the Cozumel Golf Club. It’s officially game over for golf there. Management has thrown in the towel and already carved up all that beautiful green space into building lots. No more teeing off or putting – they’re going full steam ahead, developing the whole thing into houses and condos. Many folks have great memories of playing there, but those fairways and greens are about to become someone’s backyard and living room. It stinks for all the golfers who loved that course, but that’s how it goes. The developers have decided, and there’s no turning back now – the future of that land is all about residential development.

Alternative Options for Golfers

In the meantime, golfers need not despair. There are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy golf in the area. Gran Coyote Golf in Playa del Carmen, an 18-hole par 71 masterpiece artistically captured in the coastal jungle, was designed by three-time champion Nick Price.  With its fast greens and exceptional service, this course caters to all skill levels, from amateurs to professionals. Additionally, golfers can explore other renowned courses in Mexico, such as the Riviera Maya Golf Course or the Puerto Vallarta Golf Course. These alternatives ensure that your golfing adventures in Mexico can continue, even as we await the reopening of the Cozumel Golf Club.
