Starbucks has multiple locations in Cozumel. Yes, it tastes the same as everywhere in the world. Most of the staff speak English here, so it makes it easy for a tourist.
 

COZ Coffee Roasting Company

We always come here for the peanut butter coffee because we can’t find anything like it anywhere else! They brew it with the coffee in it so it’s magical. The coffee arrives here from Oaxaca & Veracruz and is freshly roasted. This will be the freshest roast coffee you can get. Do not forget to get your coffee bean bags for those coworkers and yourself so you can reminisce on your vacation over a cup of Tom’s top coffee beans. COZ Coffee Roasting Company location is by Wet Wendy’s and Dick’s Dive if you have any trouble finding it.

As mentioned above, two places sell their roast and blends. These are Oro Magico and COZ Coffee Roasting Company. Oro Magico is our favorite because the plantation owner brings his Chiapas beans to Cozumel right after he picks them. This is the only organic coffee Stingray Villa uses.
 
If you are shopping in a grocery store for coffee, we recommend La Finca brand in a white bag. Just make sure you don’t get the white and green bag because it is decaf coffee. Cafe Punta Del Cielo is another recommended brand. They have metal tins with a pin to pop the seal on the top. If they do the packing right, there will be a burst of air that comes out with an intense coffee smell. The pricing of both brands is excellent, and the quality is too. For coffee in supermarkets, these are the best brands.

Nurse sharks:

This is the most common shark in Cozumel waters. Nurse sharks are slow-moving bottom dwellers and harmless to humans. Many divers in Cozumel see nurse sharks because, during the day, they like to rest on the sandy bottom underneath ledges or in crevices. But they can be big, up to 14 feet, have powerful jaws with thousands of tiny serrated teeth, and will bite if stepped on or disturbed by divers who think they’re gentle. They use their powerful jaws to crush shellfish but prefer to eat fish, shrimp, and squid. They’re gray-brown in color and have long tail fins up to one-fourth of their total length. Unlike most other sharks, nurses are smooth to the touch. Nurse sharks also feed on sea snakes.

Caribbean Reef Sharks:

The Caribbean Reef Shark is considered passive and rarely poses any threat to scuba divers, snorkelers, swimmers, or humans it comes into contact with. They avoid human interaction altogether. Also known as the “Reef Shark,” it has a unique color: white to light yellow on the belly and gray-brown to dark gray on the back. It has larger eyes and a rounded and short snout compared to other sharks. The Caribbean Reef Shark finds food in the reefs, such as bony fishes, crustaceans, and cephalopods. We also know they feed on yellow stingrays and eagle rays.

Hammerhead Sharks:

The hammerhead shark is the most elusive shark in Cozumel. In 20 years I have only seen one on the reefs. Lately, we have seen hammerhead sharks eating Eagle Rays and giving birth in the shallow waters around Cozumel.

They like to eat animals like other sharks, squids, crabs, jacks, herrings, tarpon, sardines, boxfish, toadfish, sea catfish, groupers, and their favorite dish, rays. They hunt their chosen prey twice a day, at dawn and dusk. The most well-known fact about them would have to be their namesake. Their flat, T-shaped heads make them stand out from other sharks.

Bull Sharks:

These are beautiful creatures. They can be bigger than any scuba diver and are sleek and powerful. Bull sharks are highly adaptable, thriving in both saltwater and freshwater environments. Other fish seem slightly more cautious when you see them on the reef. Divers have seen bull sharks on the Playa del Carmen reefs for over 30 years. Los Arcos, one of the most popular deep dive sites north of Playa del Carmen, used to be called Sharkies Place, and it was named after the common shark sightings, not the swim-throughs. These are more elusive in Cozumel than the hammerheads.

The Ancient Mayan Legacy: Cozumel’s Earliest Settlers

The story of Cozumel begins over 2000 years ago with the Mayans, the island’s original settlers. Although this timeline may seem ancient, it lays the foundation for Cozumel’s cultural heritage. The name “Cozumel” itself derives from the Mayan words “Cuzam,” meaning “swallow,” and “Lumil,” meaning “Land of.” Thus, in the Mayan language, Cozumel translates to “Land of the Swallows.” Spaniards later gave this name to the island.

The Spanish Conquest and its Dark Legacy

In 1519, the infamous Hernán Cortéz made landfall on Cozumel, leaving an indelible mark on its history. Cortéz and his men devastated many of the Mayan temples that adorned the island’s landscape. However, the destruction was not the only aftermath they left behind.

It was the Pánfilo de Narváez expedition that brought disease to Cozumel on March 5, 1520. Narváez landed briefly on the island on his way to try to catch up with Cortés. He was ordered to find and stop Cortés on the orders of Cuban Governor Diego Velázquez de Cuellar.

This 2nd expedition introduced an epidemic of smallpox to Cozumel, leading to a sharp drop in population. By 1570, the island’s inhabitants numbered fewer than 300. 

In 1672, the Batab of San Miguel de Xamancab was Martín Cuzamil, the alcalde was Pedro Oxté, the regidor Gaspar Chablé, and the escribano Mateo Chan. In Santa María de Oycib that same year, Sebastian Poot was governor, Antonio Cab the alcalde, Diego Couch and Francisco Tzamá the regidores, and Francisco Cumux the escribano. All of these men signed documents in Cozumel in 1673, explaining this to the Spanish government.

Pirates, Logwood Cutters, and Cozumel’s Resilient Community

During the 1600s, Cozumel saw British logwood cutters who settled on the island. These settlers engaged in the logwood (dyewood) trade with Europe. The Spanish authorities labeled them “piratas” because of their tax evasion, creating the enduring pirate myth associated with Cozumel. However, it wasn’t until 1848, amidst the Caste War, that the island regained its inhabitants. Seeking refuge from the conflict, settlers from the mainland sought solace in Cozumel, reviving its population.

From Fishing Village to Tourist Haven: Cozumel’s Transformation

In the 1940s, the demand for synthetic alternatives caused a decline in the chicle industry, which hit Cozumel’s economy hard and led to many residents leaving in search of new opportunities. Those who remained turned to fishing as their livelihood.

The Cozumel airport was built by Mexicana de Aviación in 1929 and opened in 1930. In 1930 it was host to twice-a-week flights from Miami and Belize. It was improved over the years, each time by Mexicana (never by the US) until it was transferred to the government in 1966.

This is when Cozumel’s fate took a turn for the best when it became a paradise for divers, attracting enthusiasts from around the world. The construction of the cruise ship dock led to a tourism boom on the island. Cozumel has gained global recognition and more people are visiting to experience the beauty.

Cozumel: A Modern-Day Marvel and Coveted Travel Destination
